The Heart Behind the Project
Ruby wasn’t just a pet — she was family. She had the kind of energy that filled a room and a presence that lingered long after she left it. When we lost her, we felt an emptiness we couldn’t quite put into words. So we turned to what we know best: storytelling.
The Ruby Project was born from that grief, but it was shaped and ultimately lifted by love. It wasn’t just about honoring her memory, but about capturing the essence of what she meant to us. We wanted to create something that reflected her warmth, her playful nature, her gentle soul the quiet strength and kindness she showed without ever needing to speak a word.
As we built the project, it became clear that this wasn’t just about saying goodbye. It was about creating something lasting. Something that held the beauty of her short life in every detail the colors, the softness, the feeling of closeness. It became more than a creative pursuit; it became a form of healing. A way to process loss through light, color, movement, and intention.
And in doing so, we realized that Ruby was still with us in the work, in the memory, and in the love we poured into every frame.
From the start, every creative decision carried emotional weight. Each choice — from the way light filtered through the studio to the textures woven into the setting — was made with care and intention. We aimed to create an environment that felt safe, gentle, and honest. The softness in the lighting wasn’t just technical; it was emotional. It allowed moments to unfold naturally, without pressure or pretense, giving space for the quiet kind of beauty that often goes unnoticed.
Rather than over-stylizing or chasing perfection, we focused on authenticity. We leaned into the real — the crooked smiles, the curious tilts of the head, the subtle glances shared between people and their dogs. We allowed room for pauses, for in-between moments, for the kind of honesty that can't be staged. Because it’s in those fleeting, unscripted seconds where meaning often lives — the moments that remind us why we love, why we grieve, and why we hold on.
Just like Ruby did in her time here, these images whisper rather than shout. They reflect the quiet truths we sometimes forget in our fast-paced world: that love is simple, presence is powerful, and the little things — a nuzzle, a wag of the tail, a shared look — are the ones that stay with us long after the moment has passed.
In the end, the Ruby Project became a celebration of memory — not a goodbye, but a thank you. It was our way of honoring not just Ruby’s life, but the bond we all share with our own companions. This wasn’t simply about creating images; it was about preserving emotion, telling stories, and giving families a chance to hold onto something real and lasting.
Each photoshoot became more than just a session. It became a moment of pause — a chance for people to be fully present with their dogs, to laugh, to reflect, and sometimes to cry. We witnessed tail wags, gentle snuggles, noses pressed to cheeks, and humans looking into eyes that have offered them comfort, loyalty, and love. We heard stories about first meetings, final days, silly habits, and unforgettable quirks. And in between the clicks of the camera, something sacred happened. Time seemed to slow down, and for a little while, nothing else existed but that love.
This project reminded us that inspiration doesn’t always come from bold headlines or flashy trends. Sometimes, it comes from a little pup who loved without limits and lived with quiet joy — a pup who left a permanent paw print on our hearts.
Ruby may be gone, but through this project — and the love it continues to inspire — she’ll always be with us. Her spirit lives on in every image we create, every story we hear, and every connection we witness between a person and their dog. This project is her legacy, and we are honored to share it with you.
For Ruby, whose short life left us better, softer, and more inspired.
The Ruby Project has shown us that photography can be more than just pictures — it can be a vessel for love, memory, and healing. Through these sessions, we’ve celebrated the deep connections people share with their dogs and created timeless reminders of the joy, loyalty, and comfort they bring into our lives.
As we reflect on this chapter of the project, we’re filled with gratitude — for the families who trusted us with their memories, for the dogs who lit up our studios with their presence, and for the quiet, powerful moments that reminded us why we do what we do.
But this is only the beginning. As the year continues, we look forward to welcoming even more families, meeting more incredible pets, and hearing the stories that make each bond unique. We can't wait to witness — and capture — the love that continues to grow, one portrait at a time.
