There’s something special about Wisconsin’s ever-changing landscape—rolling green hills, vibrant fall foliage, snowy wonderlands, and glowing summer sunsets. As photographers, we know timing is everything. When the beauty of Wisconsin’s scenery aligns with the right lighting, it creates a magical backdrop for family portraits.
So when is the best time to plan your photoshoot? Let’s break it down season by season.
Spring in Wisconsin offers a fresh, airy feel with budding trees, blossoming flowers, and that lovely soft light only early-season sun can provide. The grass is vibrantly green, tulips and lilacs start to bloom, and everything feels brand new. Early morning and late afternoon sessions are perfect in spring—giving you golden light with cooler temperatures and fewer bugs.
Ideal months: Late April – Early June
Best for: Playful, bright, and natural-feeling portraits
Bonus: Spring is less busy for scheduling—more flexibility with your shoot date!
By summer, Wisconsin’s landscapes are in full swing. Trees are full, the skies are often clear, and fields of wildflowers pop up everywhere. With longer daylight hours, evening shoots during golden hour (the hour before sunset) create warm, glowing portraits.
Ideal months: Mid-June – Mid-August
Best for: Outdoor adventures, barefoot-in-the-grass moments, and extended daylight flexibility
Bonus: School’s out—easier for families to schedule together!
Fall might just be Wisconsin’s most iconic season for photography. The reds, oranges, and yellows of the leaves provide a stunning, colorful backdrop. Paired with the cozy textures of clothing, scarves, and boots, fall portraits always feel nostalgic and warm. Just remember—peak color changes quickly, so planning ahead is key!
Ideal months: Late September – Mid-October
Best for: Cozy, color-rich portraits that feel timeless
Bonus: Cooler temps make layering (and cuddling close) comfortable and cute.
No matter the season, lighting can make or break a photo. The best light happens during “golden hour”—about one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset. That’s when the sun is low in the sky, casting soft, warm light that flatters everyone.
If your family includes little ones with early bedtimes, early morning sessions can work beautifully in spring and fall. Otherwise, evening sessions are a great choice in summer and early fall.
The best time for photos depends on your family’s vibe, availability, and what kind of mood you want to capture. Do you love bold colors and cozy sweaters? Fall might be perfect. Prefer sunshine and barefoot fun? Summer's calling your name. Want something unique? Don’t rule out winter or spring.
No matter the season, Wisconsin always delivers something beautiful—and we’re here to help you capture it.
