Ask the Photographer: Real Questions from Clients

Honest answers about what to wear, how to prepare, and how to make the most of your session at Harmann Studios

If you’ve ever thought about booking a portrait session but felt unsure about the details—you’re not alone. At Harmann Studios, we hear a lot of the same questions from families, couples, and pet owners. And honestly? We love it. Because the more prepared you feel, the more relaxed and meaningful your session will be.

So today, we’re answering some of the most common questions we get no fluff, just real guidance to help you feel confident walking into your photoshoot.

What should we wear for our session?

This is easily the #1 question we get and for good reason.

The goal isn’t to match perfectly. It’s to coordinate.

Start with 2–3 main colors and build everyone’s outfits around that palette. Think soft neutrals, earth tones, or muted colors that won’t distract from your faces and connection. Avoid loud patterns, large logos, or anything super trendy that might feel dated later.

For families, we recommend:

  • Mixing textures (knits, denim, linen)
  • Adding layers for depth
  • Keeping things comfortable so you can move naturally

And don’t stress we guide every Harmann Studios client through a custom design consultation, where we help you plan outfits based on your home, style, and how you want to display your images.

What if my kids don’t behave?

Short answer: they don’t have to.

Long answer: some of the most meaningful images come from real, unfiltered moments. We don’t expect kids to sit still and smile perfectly the entire time. We create an environment where they can relax, play, and just be themselves.

A few tips to help things go smoothly:

  • Make sure they’re well-rested and fed beforehand
  • Let us take the lead—we’re experienced in working with all personalities

We promise: we’ve seen it all, and we know how to capture the magic in the chaos.

How do I prepare for my session?

Preparation doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, the simpler the better.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Plan outfits ahead of time (and try them on!)
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early so you’re not rushed
  • Keep the day low-stress avoid overbooking your schedule
  • For pets: bring treats, a leash, and anything that helps them feel comfortable

Most importantly, come in with an open mind. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do that’s our job.

What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?

You’re normal.

Seriously almost every client says this at some point. And by the end of the session? They’re laughing, relaxed, and telling us it was easier than they expected.

We guide you through everything:

  • Natural posing (nothing stiff or overly staged)
  • Where to look, what to do with your hands
  • How to interact with each other so it feels genuine

Our approach is simple: we don’t just photograph how you look we capture how it feels to be you together.

Can I include my dog (or multiple pets)?

Absolutely! Pets are family.

At Harmann Studios, we specialize in pet portraits and love incorporating dogs into sessions. Whether it’s just your pup or your whole family together, we’ll guide you on how to prepare so everything runs smoothly.

A few quick tips:

  • Keep dogs leashed when arriving
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early to let them get their sniffs in, use the bathroom, and get acclimated to the space
  • Bring treats or a favorite toy
  • Let them burn a little energy beforehand

And yes we’re very used to working with wiggly, excited, and curious dogs.

How long does a session take?

Most sessions are about one hour, but we never rush the experience. We take the time needed to capture a variety of images while keeping things relaxed and enjoyable.

After your session, you’ll come back for your reveal session, where you’ll see your images for the first time and choose your favorites.

Final Thoughts: It’s Not About Perfection

At the end of the day, your session isn’t about perfect outfits, perfectly behaved kids, or knowing exactly what to do.

It’s about:

  • Capturing your family as you are right now
  • Freezing moments that pass too quickly
  • Creating something meaningful that lasts

And we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
