Family Portrait FAQ: Session Guide

Below are 30 of the most common questions families ask when searching for a family portrait photographer in the Green Bay and De Pere area, along with helpful answers.

Pricing & Packages

Q: How much do family portraits cost in the Green Bay area?

A: At Harmann Studios, family portrait sessions are designed as a full-service experience, with the session fee typically starting at $125–$175 depending on the type of session (studio or outdoor). This fee covers the time, talent, and photography experience, while final investment varies based on the  images you choose after your session.

Booking & Scheduling

Q: How far in advance should I book a family session?

A: For fall sessions in the Green Bay area, we recommend booking 2–3 months ahead because that's our busiest season. For other times of year, 4 weeks is usually plenty, though earlier is always better if you have a specific date in mind.

Q: What's the best time of year for family portraits in Wisconsin?

A: Fall is wildly popular in Northeast Wisconsin thanks to the gorgeous color, but every season has something special  spring blossoms and summer greenery all photograph beautifully. The best time is really whenever your family can be relaxed and present.

Q:  What time of day is best for family pictures?

A: Outdoors, we love the soft "golden hour" light about an hour before sunset, and many families also love early morning sessions when little ones are at their best. In our De Pere studio, time of day doesn't matter, we control the light.

Q: Can we book around extended family visiting from out of town?

A: Absolutely, and we love these sessions. Just give us as much notice as possible so we can lock in a date that works for everyone, especially during the summer when grandparents tend to be in town.

Q: How often should families update their portraits?

A: We generally suggest every 1–2 years, especially while kids are growing quickly. Many of our Green Bay families build it into their tradition annual fall sessions, or every other summer and the wall of portraits over the years becomes one of their favorite things.

Preparation

Q: What should we wear for family pictures?

A: Coordinate without matching exactly, pick a palette of 2–4 complementary colors and let everyone pull from it in their own style. Avoid large logos and busy patterns, lean into textures and layers, and we'll send a full style guide once you book.

Q:  How do I prepare my kids for a family session?

A: Keep it low-key on session day, feed them well, let them rest, and avoid hyping it up to the point of pressure. Telling them it'll be quick and fun (and maybe involve a little post-session ice cream in De Pere) usually works better than long pep talks.

Q: Can babies and toddlers be part of the session?

A: Of course we love photographing little ones, and after 60+ years we've seen every mood a toddler can bring. We work quickly, stay flexible, and build in plenty of grace for snacks, snuggles, and meltdowns.

Q: Can we bring our dog to the family session?

A: Yes! Pets are family, and we welcome well-behaved dogs at both our studio and outdoor sessions. We'd recommend bringing a second adult who can hold the leash just out of frame and help reset between shots.

Q: What if someone in the family really doesn't like getting their picture taken?

A: You're not alone, there's almost always one reluctant family member, and that's okay. We keep things relaxed, lead with humor instead of stiff posing, and most folks tell us afterward it was way easier than they expected.

Locations

Q: Where do you photograph family portraits?

A: We shoot at our professional studio in De Pere as well as a variety of outdoor locations throughout the Green Bay area and Northeast Wisconsin. Whether you want a polished studio look, a natural park setting, or something meaningful to your family, we'll help you choose.

Q: What outdoor locations do you recommend near De Pere?

A: We love spots along the Fox River, local parks and nature areas around De Pere and Green Bay, and rural locations with open fields and tree lines for that classic Wisconsin look. We’ll recommend the best fit based on your family’s vibe and the season, and help you choose the perfect setting through our tailored location guide.

Q: Do you offer studio family portraits?

A: Yes, our De Pere studio is fully equipped for family portraits of all sizes, from couples to extended families. The studio is a great option in winter, in bad weather, or anytime you want a clean, classic look that won't go out of style.

Q: Indoor or outdoor, which is better for families?

A: Both have real strengths: outdoor sessions feel relaxed and seasonal, while studio sessions give you timeless, distraction-free portraits regardless of weather. Many families end up doing both over the years to get a mix.

During the Session

Q: How long does a family portrait session last?

A: Most family sessions run an hour or longer depending on the group size. We pace things to capture variety without wearing out the youngest members of the group.

Q: How do you keep kids engaged during the session?

A: We use games, silly prompts, and genuine interaction rather than asking kids to "say cheese"  which is why our sessions tend to produce real smiles and natural moments. After 60+ years photographing families in the Green Bay area, we've built up quite a toolbox.

Q: How big of a group can you photograph?

A: We regularly photograph everything from couples to extended families of 30+ people. For larger groups, we just ask for a heads-up at booking so we can plan lighting, location, and timing to keep things smooth.

Q: Can we include grandparents and extended family?

A: Yes, and we'd encourage it. Multigenerational portraits are some of the most treasured images we create. A great-grandparent surrounded by the next three generations is a gift your family will hold onto forever.

Q: What if my child has a meltdown during the session?

A: It happens truly, every session has its moments and we just roll with it. We'll take a snack break, switch up the activity, and come back to it; some of our favorite images come right after the meltdown when everyone exhales.

After the Session

Q: How long until we see our family portraits?

A: You'll typically see your gallery within 1–2 weeks of your session, sometimes sooner. Every image we deliver is hand-edited, which is part of why our portraits hold up so well over time.

Q: How do we order prints and wall art?

A: After your session, we'll guide you through a personalized reveal session where you can see your images at actual size on your walls and choose prints, canvases, framed art, or albums. We utilize our in-house print facility that produces results miles beyond drugstore printing.

Q: Do you make family albums?

A: Yes, and our albums are one of the things we're known for in Northeast Wisconsin. They're beautifully designed, archival quality, and genuinely the kind of thing your kids will fight over someday (in the best way).

Q: How long do you keep our images on file?

A: We archive family portraits for a year so you can come back later for reorders, gifts, or anniversary prints. After that year they are archived but we can still retrieve them if you ever wanted(at a slight fee) to reprint one of your favorite pictures!
